An Introduction to Shad Thames
Shad Thames is a historic riverside street, next to Tower Bridge, it is also an informal name for the surrounding area. The street itself has Tower Bridge at its west end, and it runs along the south side of the river Thames, set behind a row of converted warehouses. The area itself refers to a rectangle of streets, warehouses and residential buildings at the most north-easterly corner of the SE1 postcode district. This area is also sometimes called Butler’s Wharf.
Travel Links in Shad Thames
The borders of Shad Thames are slightly unofficial, but there are no London Underground or Overground stations in the immediate vicinity. The closest stations are Bermondsey, which is on the Jubilee line, or London Bridge, which is on the Northern and Jubilee lines, as well as a range of national rail lines.
Shad Thames has become somewhat of a hit on Instagram, the area is filled with converted warehouses, cobbled streets and towering gantries, which make it a statement photo backdrop. The area once fed the city, being known as the larder of London, the walkways we see now were used to roll barrels from warehouse to warehouse. Today, those walkways are balconies for upmarket flats. If you want everyday views of the river and Tower Bridge, along with gritty, Victorian architecture, our estate agents recommend Shad Thames.
