An Introduction to Shad Thames
Shad Thames is a historic riverside street, next to Tower Bridge, it is also an informal name for the surrounding area. The street itself has Tower Bridge at its west end, and it runs along the south side of the river Thames, set behind a row of converted warehouses. The area itself refers to a rectangle of streets, warehouses and residential buildings at the most north-easterly corner of the SE1 postcode district. This area is also sometimes called Butler’s Wharf. Our property agents love the industrial, Victorian architecture of the area.
Travel Links in Shad Thames
The borders of Shad Thames are slightly unofficial, but there are no London Underground or Overground stations in the immediate vicinity. The closest stations are Bermondsey, which is on the Jubilee line, or London Bridge, which is on the Northern and Jubilee lines, as well as a range of national rail lines.
Local Tips
Shad Thames was once known as the ‘larder of London’, ships used to come in to dock here, laden with exotic foods and spices from across the world. The walkways we see now were originally used to roll barrels from warehouse to warehouse. Today, those walkways are balconies for upmarket flats, and the cobbled streets and industrial feel has led to Shad Thames becoming an iconic Instagram location.
